Purpose & theme

Acts is the thrilling second volume of Luke’s history, the bridge between the Gospels and the Letters, telling how the good news of the risen Jesus exploded out of a Jerusalem upper room and spread across the Roman world all the way to Rome itself. Its full title, “The Acts of the Apostles,” is almost a misnomer; it is really the acts of the risen Christ, working by His Spirit through His church. Luke’s opening words tie it directly to his Gospel: that first book was about “all that Jesus began to do and teach,” implying that Acts records what Jesus continued to do and teach, now from heaven and through His people. The book’s theme verse is the risen Lord’s own commission and promise: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (1:8).

That single verse is also the book’s outline. Acts traces the unstoppable advance of the gospel in ever-widening circles: from Jerusalem (chapters 1-7), through Judea and Samaria (chapters 8-12), and finally to the ends of the earth (chapters 13-28), as the apostle Paul carries the message across Asia Minor and Greece to the capital of the empire. Along the way Luke shows the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the birth and growth of the church, the first martyrdoms, the dramatic conversion of Saul the persecutor into Paul the apostle, and the momentous opening of the door of faith to the Gentiles. Through persecution, imprisonment, riots, and shipwreck, “the word of God increased and multiplied,” for nothing could stop the mission of God. Acts ends not with a tidy conclusion but with Paul in Rome, preaching the kingdom “with all boldness and without hindrance” — an open ending that invites every generation to continue the story.
