On the day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit descends with wind and tongues of fire, and the disciples proclaim the wonders of God in many languages to Jews from every nation. Peter preaches the first Christian sermon, declaring that the crucified Jesus has been raised and exalted, and that God has made Him “both Lord and Christ.” Cut to the heart, the crowd asks what to do; Peter calls them to “repent and be baptized,” and about three thousand are added. The new church devotes itself to the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, the breaking of bread, and prayer.
