Acts 7

c. AD 31Stephen recounts Israel’s history, indicts his hearers, and is stoned, becoming the first martyr, as Saul looks on.

Before the council, Stephen recounts Israel’s history from Abraham to Solomon, showing that God’s presence was never confined to the temple and that Israel had always resisted the Holy Spirit and rejected those God sent. He charges his hearers with betraying and murdering the Righteous One. Enraged, they stone him; but Stephen, seeing the glory of God and Jesus standing at His right hand, prays for his killers and commits his spirit to Jesus. A young man named Saul approves of his death.
