Chapters 1–9

The Reign of Solomon

Solomon’s wisdom and the building and dedication of the temple.

Chapter 1 (c. 970 BC): Solomon asks God for wisdom to govern, and God grants him wisdom, riches, and honor.
Chapter 2 (c. 966 BC): Solomon arranges with Hiram of Tyre for materials and skilled labor to build the temple.
Chapter 3 (c. 966 BC): Solomon builds the temple on Mount Moriah, overlaying it with gold and crafting the cherubim.
Chapter 4 (c. 960 BC): The bronze altar, the great sea, the lampstands, and the furnishings of the temple are made.
Chapter 5 (c. 959 BC): The ark is brought in, and the glory of the LORD fills the temple as a cloud.
Chapter 6 (c. 959 BC): Solomon blesses the people and prays his great prayer of dedication.
Chapter 7 (c. 959 BC): Fire falls from heaven, and God appears with the promise, “if my people... humble themselves.”
Chapter 8 (c. 950 BC): Solomon’s building projects, labor force, and ordered worship.
Chapter 9 (c. 945 BC): The Queen of Sheba visits, and Solomon’s fame, wisdom, and wealth are recounted before his death.

Chapters 10–36

The Kings of Judah

The line of Davidic kings through reform and decline to exile, and the promise of return.

Chapter 10 (c. 930 BC): Rehoboam’s harshness splits the kingdom, and the northern tribes revolt.
Chapter 11 (c. 930 BC): Rehoboam fortifies Judah, and the faithful priests and Levites come to him from the north.
Chapter 12 (c. 925 BC): Rehoboam forsakes the law; Shishak of Egypt invades, but humbling brings partial mercy.
Chapter 13 (c. 913 BC): Abijah defeats Jeroboam’s larger army by relying on the LORD.
Chapter 14 (c. 910 BC): Asa’s reforms and his God-given victory over Zerah’s vast Ethiopian army.
Chapter 15 (c. 895 BC): Encouraged by Azariah, Asa leads a great covenant renewal to seek the LORD.
Chapter 16 (c. 880 BC): Asa relies on Aram rather than the LORD and is rebuked by the seer Hanani.
Chapter 17 (c. 870 BC): Jehoshaphat walks faithfully and sends teachers of the law throughout Judah.
Chapter 18 (c. 853 BC): Jehoshaphat allies with Ahab and joins a doomed battle, warned by the prophet Micaiah.
Chapter 19 (c. 853 BC): Jehoshaphat appoints judges, charging them to judge in the fear of the LORD.
Chapter 20 (c. 850 BC): Facing invasion, Jehoshaphat leads Judah in prayer and praise, and God defeats the enemy.
Chapter 21 (c. 845 BC): Jehoram murders his brothers, leads Judah into idolatry, and dies a horrible death.
Chapter 22 (c. 841 BC): Ahaziah’s brief reign, and Athaliah’s murderous seizure of the throne.
Chapter 23 (c. 835 BC): Jehoiada the priest crowns the boy Joash and has Athaliah put to death.
Chapter 24 (c. 820 BC): Joash repairs the temple but turns to idolatry and murder after Jehoiada’s death.
Chapter 25 (c. 796 BC): Amaziah serves the LORD half-heartedly, then turns to idols and falls in pride.
Chapter 26 (c. 750 BC): Uzziah grows great by seeking God but is struck with leprosy for his proud intrusion.
Chapter 27 (c. 740 BC): Jotham becomes mighty because he orders his ways before the LORD his God.
Chapter 28 (c. 732 BC): Ahaz plunges Judah into idolatry and distress and shuts the doors of the temple.
Chapter 29 (c. 715 BC): Hezekiah reopens and cleanses the temple and restores its worship.
Chapter 30 (c. 715 BC): Hezekiah invites all Israel to a great Passover in Jerusalem with joy.
Chapter 31 (c. 715 BC): Hezekiah reorganizes the priests and Levites and secures provision for worship.
Chapter 32 (c. 701 BC): Sennacherib invades, but Hezekiah trusts the LORD, who delivers Jerusalem.
Chapter 33 (c. 690 BC): Manasseh’s great wickedness, his repentance in exile, and Amon’s evil reign.
Chapter 34 (c. 622 BC): Young Josiah reforms Judah, and the Book of the Law is found in the temple.
Chapter 35 (c. 622 BC): Josiah keeps an unequaled Passover, then dies in battle at Megiddo.
Chapter 36 (605-538 BC): The last kings of Judah, the fall of Jerusalem, the exile, and the decree of Cyrus.
