Chapters 1–9

The Reign of Solomon

Solomon’s wisdom and the building and dedication of the temple.

  • Chapter 1 (c. 970 BC): Solomon asks God for wisdom to govern, and God grants him wisdom, riches, and honor.
  • Chapter 2 (c. 966 BC): Solomon arranges with Hiram of Tyre for materials and skilled labor to build the temple.
  • Chapter 3 (c. 966 BC): Solomon builds the temple on Mount Moriah, overlaying it with gold and crafting the cherubim.
  • Chapter 4 (c. 960 BC): The bronze altar, the great sea, the lampstands, and the furnishings of the temple are made.
  • Chapter 5 (c. 959 BC): The ark is brought in, and the glory of the LORD fills the temple as a cloud.
  • Chapter 6 (c. 959 BC): Solomon blesses the people and prays his great prayer of dedication.
  • Chapter 7 (c. 959 BC): Fire falls from heaven, and God appears with the promise, “if my people... humble themselves.”
  • Chapter 8 (c. 950 BC): Solomon’s building projects, labor force, and ordered worship.
  • Chapter 9 (c. 945 BC): The Queen of Sheba visits, and Solomon’s fame, wisdom, and wealth are recounted before his death.
