At Shechem the northern tribes ask Rehoboam to lighten the heavy yoke of Solomon’s labor. Rejecting the elders’ counsel for that of his young companions, Rehoboam threatens harsher rule, and ten tribes revolt under Jeroboam, crying, “What portion do we have in David?” Only Judah remains loyal to David’s house, and the kingdom is torn in two.
