Sennacherib of Assyria invades Judah and besieges the fortified cities, and his officials taunt Hezekiah and blaspheme the LORD as no better than the powerless gods of the nations. Hezekiah strengthens the city and encourages the people, “with us is the LORD our God, to help us and to fight our battles,” and he and the prophet Isaiah cry out in prayer. The LORD sends an angel who destroys the Assyrian army, and Sennacherib returns in shame and is killed by his own sons.
