Manasseh reigns fifty-five years and does more evil than the nations Israel dispossessed, rebuilding the high places, setting idols in the temple, practicing sorcery, and shedding much innocent blood. But when the Assyrians take him captive to Babylon in hooks, he humbles himself greatly and prays, and God, remarkably, hears him and restores him to Jerusalem, where he removes the idols — a stunning testimony to the depth of God’s mercy. His son Amon, however, does not humble himself and is assassinated.
