Chapters 1–3

Christ Among the Churches

The overwhelming vision of the glorified Christ walking among the seven golden lampstands, and His letters of commendation, warning, and promise to the seven churches of Asia.

  • Chapter 1 (c. AD 95): John, exiled on Patmos, sees a vision of the glorified Christ among the seven lampstands.
  • Chapter 2 (c. AD 95): Christ’s letters to the churches at Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, and Thyatira.
  • Chapter 3 (c. AD 95): Christ’s letters to the churches at Sardis, Philadelphia, and lukewarm Laodicea.

Chapters 4–5

The Throne and the Lamb

The vision of the heavenly throne room, where God is worshiped as Creator, and the slain Lamb alone is found worthy to open the scroll of history.

  • Chapter 4 (c. AD 95): The vision of the heavenly throne room, where God the Creator is worshiped without ceasing.
  • Chapter 5 (c. AD 95): The slain but living Lamb alone is worthy to open the sealed scroll, and all heaven worships Him.

Chapters 6–16

The Seals, Trumpets, and Bowls

Cycles of escalating judgment poured out on a rebellious world, interwoven with visions of God’s sealed and worshiping people and the cosmic conflict between the dragon and the church.

  • Chapter 6 (c. AD 95): The Lamb opens six seals, unleashing the four horsemen and the world’s upheaval, and the cry of the martyrs.
  • Chapter 7 (c. AD 95): The sealing of God’s servants and a great multitude from every nation worshiping before the throne.
  • Chapter 8 (c. AD 95): The seventh seal and the first four trumpets bring devastating judgments upon the earth.
  • Chapter 9 (c. AD 95): The fifth and sixth trumpets loose demonic torment and destruction, yet the rest do not repent.
  • Chapter 10 (c. AD 95): A mighty angel and the little scroll that John is told to eat, sweet then bitter.
  • Chapter 11 (c. AD 95): The two witnesses, their death and resurrection, and the seventh trumpet announcing God’s reign.
  • Chapter 12 (c. AD 95): The woman, the male child, and the dragon (Satan) cast down, who makes war on her offspring.
  • Chapter 13 (c. AD 95): The beast from the sea and the beast from the earth, demanding worship and marking their own.
  • Chapter 14 (c. AD 95): The Lamb and the 144,000, the announcements of angels, and the harvest of the earth.
  • Chapter 15 (c. AD 95): The song of Moses and the Lamb, and the seven angels with the seven last plagues.
  • Chapter 16 (c. AD 95): The seven bowls of God’s wrath are poured out, and the world gathers at Armageddon.

Chapters 17–20

Babylon Falls and Christ Returns

The judgment and fall of “Babylon the great,” the return of the King on a white horse, the defeat of the beast and the dragon, and the final judgment at the great white throne.

  • Chapter 17 (c. AD 95): The great prostitute, “Babylon,” seated on the beast, drunk with the blood of the saints.
  • Chapter 18 (c. AD 95): The fall of Babylon the great is announced, and the earth mourns her ruin.
  • Chapter 19 (c. AD 95): Heaven rejoices at Babylon’s fall, and Christ returns on a white horse as King of kings.
  • Chapter 20 (c. AD 95): The binding of Satan, the reign of the saints, the final defeat of Satan, and the great white throne judgment.

Chapters 21–22

New Heaven and New Earth

The new creation and the holy city, the new Jerusalem, where God dwells with His people, the curse is undone, and the Lamb reigns forever, closing with the promise, “I am coming soon.”

  • Chapter 21 (c. AD 95): A new heaven and a new earth, and the holy city, the new Jerusalem, where God dwells with His people.
  • Chapter 22 (c. AD 95): The river and tree of life, the promise of Christ’s coming, and the final invitation, “Come.”
