Leviticus

Purpose & theme

Leviticus is the book of drawing near. Exodus ended with the glory of the LORD filling the tabernacle so completely that even Moses could not enter (Exodus 40:34-35); Leviticus opens with God calling out of that tabernacle to teach a redeemed but sinful people how they may come into His presence and live. Its great question is the one raised by God’s own holiness dwelling in the middle of the camp: how can an unholy people live next to a holy God without being consumed?

The answer runs through two words that dominate the book: sacrifice and holiness. The first half (chapters 1-16) shows the way of approach — the five offerings, the ordination of the priesthood, the laws of clean and unclean, and the Day of Atonement, when the whole nation’s sin is dealt with once a year. The second half (chapters 17-27), often called the Holiness Code, shows the way of life that follows — a people set apart in worship, sexuality, justice, speech, business, and time, because “you shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy” (Leviticus 19:2).

Leviticus can feel remote, a book of blood and ritual, but its logic is the gospel in shadow: a holy God graciously provides the way for sinners to be forgiven, cleansed, and brought near, and then calls them to live as those who belong to Him. Every altar points forward to a cross, and every “be holy” to the God who says, “I am the LORD who sanctifies you” (Leviticus 20:8).
