Key Verses: Leviticus 15:2, 15:13, 15:31
The laws of purity address bodily discharges, both chronic and normal, in men and women. Such discharges render a person unclean, along with anything they lie or sit on, until a period of waiting, washing, and, for chronic conditions, an offering of two birds. The chapter closes with the reason for all these regulations: “Thus you shall keep the people of Israel separate from their uncleanness, lest they die in their uncleanness by defiling my tabernacle that is in their midst.”
These laws surround the most ordinary and intimate areas of bodily life with the awareness that Israel lives next to a holy God, so that the whole of existence, not merely worship, is touched by the call to purity. The point is not that the body is shameful but that impurity, wherever it arises, must not be carried carelessly into God’s presence. Against this backdrop shines the account of the woman with a discharge of blood for twelve years — perpetually unclean under this chapter — who touches the hem of Jesus’ garment and is healed; instead of her uncleanness defiling Him, His power cleanses her, and He calls her “Daughter” (Mark 5:25-34).
