Chapters 1–9

The Genealogies

The family lines from Adam to the return from exile, tracing God’s chosen people.

Chapter 1 (genealogy): The line from Adam through Noah’s sons to Abraham, Isaac, and Esau’s descendants.
Chapter 2 (genealogy): The sons of Israel and the descendants of Judah, the royal tribe, toward David.
Chapter 3 (genealogy): The sons of David, the kings of Judah, and the line continued after the exile.
Chapter 4 (genealogy): Further descendants of Judah and Simeon, including the prayer of Jabez.
Chapter 5 (genealogy): The eastern tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half-Manasseh, exiled for their unfaithfulness.
Chapter 6 (genealogy): The line of Levi, the priests, and the singers appointed for the house of the LORD.
Chapter 7 (genealogy): The genealogies of Issachar, Benjamin, Naphtali, Manasseh, Ephraim, and Asher.

Chapters 10–29

The Reign of David

David’s kingship retold with worship at its center, and his preparations for the temple.

Chapter 10 (c. 1010 BC): Saul and his sons fall at Gilboa, for Saul died for his unfaithfulness to the LORD.
Chapter 11 (c. 1003 BC): All Israel makes David king; he captures Jerusalem, and his mighty men are named.
Chapter 12 (c. 1003 BC): The warriors from every tribe who came to David to turn the kingdom to him.
Chapter 13 (c. 1003 BC): The attempt to bring up the ark ends with the death of Uzzah for irreverence.
Chapter 14 (c. 1003 BC): David’s palace and family, and his LORD-given victories over the Philistines.
Chapter 15 (c. 1003 BC): David brings the ark to Jerusalem properly, carried by the Levites with joyful music.
Chapter 16 (c. 1003 BC): The ark is placed in the tent, and David appoints singers and gives a psalm of thanksgiving.
Chapter 17 (c. 1000 BC): God covenants with David, promising him an everlasting house, throne, and kingdom.
Chapter 18 (c. 1000 BC): David’s victories extend the kingdom, and he administers justice to all his people.
Chapter 19 (c. 995 BC): David defeats the Ammonites and their Aramean allies who had insulted his envoys.
Chapter 20 (c. 995 BC): The capture of Rabbah and further battles against the giants of the Philistines.
Chapter 21 (c. 975 BC): David’s proud census brings a plague; he buys Ornan’s threshing floor for an altar.
Chapter 22 (c. 975 BC): David gathers materials and charges Solomon to build the house of the LORD.
Chapter 23 (c. 971 BC): David numbers and organizes the Levites for the service of the temple.
Chapter 24 (c. 971 BC): The twenty-four divisions of the priests and the ordering of the Levites.
Chapter 25 (c. 971 BC): The temple musicians of Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun are set in their courses.
Chapter 26 (c. 971 BC): The gatekeepers, the treasurers, and the officials of the temple are appointed.
Chapter 27 (c. 971 BC): The military divisions, the tribal leaders, and the officers of the king.
Chapter 28 (c. 971 BC): David publicly charges Solomon and Israel and gives the plans for the temple.
Chapter 29 (c. 971 BC): David’s final offerings and prayer of praise; Solomon is made king, and David dies.
