In his old age David makes Solomon king and organizes the Levites, numbering them and dividing them for the many tasks of temple service — assisting the priests, caring for the courts and the holy things, and offering thanks and praise morning and evening. Since the ark will now have a permanent home, the Levites’ ancient duty of carrying it gives way to the ordered ministry of the temple.
