Chapters 1–4

Christ Superior to Angels and Moses

God has spoken finally in His Son, who is greater than the angels and than Moses; therefore hold fast, do not harden your hearts, and enter the Sabbath rest that remains for the people of God.

  • Chapter 1 (c. AD 65): God has spoken by His Son, the radiance of His glory, who is far superior to the angels.
  • Chapter 2 (c. AD 65): The Son became man to taste death for everyone and to be a merciful and faithful high priest.
  • Chapter 3 (c. AD 65): Christ is greater than Moses; do not harden your hearts as Israel did in the wilderness.
  • Chapter 4 (c. AD 65): A Sabbath rest remains; hold fast and draw near with confidence to the throne of grace.

Chapters 5–10

Christ Our Great High Priest

Jesus is a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek, greater than the Levitical priesthood, mediating a better covenant and offering Himself as the single, once-for-all sacrifice that perfects His people, so that we may draw near with confidence.

  • Chapter 5 (c. AD 65): Christ is a high priest appointed by God after the order of Melchizedek; a warning against spiritual dullness.
  • Chapter 6 (c. AD 65): A solemn warning against falling away, and the sure anchor of God’s unchangeable promise.
  • Chapter 7 (c. AD 65): Melchizedek foreshadows Christ’s superior, permanent priesthood, able to save to the uttermost.
  • Chapter 8 (c. AD 65): Christ mediates a better covenant, foretold by Jeremiah, making the first obsolete.
  • Chapter 9 (c. AD 65): Christ entered the true sanctuary by His own blood, securing eternal redemption.
  • Chapter 10 (c. AD 65): By a single offering Christ has perfected His people; so hold fast and do not shrink back.

Chapters 11–13

Faith and Endurance

The great cloud of witnesses who lived by faith, the call to run with endurance looking to Jesus, God’s fatherly discipline, and final exhortations to love, holiness, worship, and enduring praise.

  • Chapter 11 (c. AD 65): The great roll call of faith, from Abel to the prophets, who trusted God’s promises.
  • Chapter 12 (c. AD 65): Run with endurance, looking to Jesus, and receive the Father’s discipline and an unshakable kingdom.
  • Chapter 13 (c. AD 65): Final exhortations to love, holiness, and worship, for Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
