Because of this, “we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away.” How shall we escape if we “neglect such a great salvation”? The author then explains why the Son became lower than the angels for a time: so that “by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.” Since God’s children share flesh and blood, Jesus partook of the same, “that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,” and free those enslaved by fear of death. He was made like His brothers in every respect, “so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest,” able to help those who are tempted because He Himself suffered when tempted.
