Hebrews 11

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” The author then parades the great cloud of witnesses who lived by faith: Abel offered a better sacrifice; Enoch was taken up; Noah built the ark; Abraham obeyed and sojourned, offering up Isaac, trusting God could raise the dead; Sarah received power to conceive; Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph blessed the future; Moses chose to suffer with God’s people rather than enjoy Egypt’s treasures, keeping the Passover and passing through the Red Sea; and the walls of Jericho fell. Rahab, Gideon, Samson, David, Samuel, and the prophets conquered kingdoms and endured torture, mockery, and death, “of whom the world was not worthy.” Yet “all these, though commended through their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had provided something better for us.”
