Chapters 1–2

Vashti deposed and the Jewish orphan Esther raised to the throne of Persia.

Chapter 1 (483 BC): King Ahasuerus deposes Queen Vashti for refusing to appear at his lavish feast.
Chapter 2 (479 BC): Esther, a Jewish orphan raised by Mordecai, is made queen, and Mordecai uncovers a plot against the king.

Chapters 3–7

Haman’s plot to destroy the Jews, Mordecai’s stand, and the sleepless night that reverses everything.

Chapter 3 (474 BC): Enraged that Mordecai will not bow, Haman plots to destroy all the Jews and casts the lot, Pur.
Chapter 4 (474 BC): Mordecai urges Esther to intervene: “who knows whether you have not come... for such a time as this?”
Chapter 5 (473 BC): Esther risks her life to approach the king and invites him and Haman to a banquet.
Chapter 6 (473 BC): Unable to sleep, the king reads the records and honors Mordecai, to Haman’s humiliation.
Chapter 7 (473 BC): At the second banquet Esther exposes Haman, who is hanged on the gallows he built for Mordecai.

Chapters 8–10

The Jews delivered from their enemies, and the feast of Purim established.

Chapter 8 (473 BC): A new decree allows the Jews to defend themselves, and joy spreads throughout the empire.
Chapter 9 (473 BC): The Jews defeat their enemies, and the feast of Purim is established to remember it.
Chapter 10 (473 BC): Mordecai is exalted as second to the king, seeking the welfare of his people.
