That very night the king cannot sleep and has the royal records read to him, discovering that Mordecai’s exposure of the assassination plot was never rewarded. When Haman arrives to request Mordecai’s execution, the king asks him what should be done for the man the king wishes to honor. Haman, assuming it is himself, describes a lavish public honor — and is then ordered to bestow it all on Mordecai, leading him through the city in triumph. Humiliated, Haman is warned by his wife and advisers that his fall before this Jew has surely begun.
