Esther 9

On the fateful day, the reverse of what the enemies had hoped occurs: the Jews, whom all now fear, gain the mastery over those who sought their harm, striking down their foes and Haman’s ten sons, though they take no plunder. Mordecai and Esther establish the two days of feasting, gladness, and gift-giving as the annual festival of Purim — named from Pur, the lot Haman cast — to be kept by all Jews in every generation as the days their sorrow was turned to joy.
