Chapters 1–2

Judgment on Israel’s neighbors and finally on Israel itself, “for three transgressions and for four.”

Chapter 1 (c. 760 BC): Judgment oracles against Damascus, Gaza, Tyre, and Edom for their cruelty and broken faith.
Chapter 2 (c. 760 BC): Judgment on Ammon, Moab, and Judah, and then a searing indictment of Israel’s injustice and immorality.

Chapters 3–6

Indictments of Israel’s injustice, empty worship, and complacency, with the cry to “let justice roll down.”

Chapter 3 (c. 760 BC): Israel’s privilege means greater accountability; the prophet must speak, and Samaria will fall.
Chapter 4 (c. 760 BC): Rebuke of the pampered women of Samaria and God’s repeated chastisements — “yet you did not return to me.”
Chapter 5 (c. 760 BC): A lament over Israel, a plea to “seek me and live,” and the demand that justice roll down like waters.
Chapter 6 (c. 760 BC): Woe to those at ease in Zion, complacent and self-indulgent, heedless of the ruin to come.

Chapters 7–9

Visions of coming judgment, the clash with Amaziah, and the closing promise to raise up David’s fallen booth.

Chapter 7 (c. 760 BC): Visions of locusts, fire, and a plumb line, and Amos’s confrontation with Amaziah, priest of Bethel.
Chapter 8 (c. 760 BC): The vision of summer fruit signals the end has come, with a warning of a famine of hearing God’s words.
Chapter 9 (c. 760 BC): The Lord stands by the altar in judgment from which none can flee, yet promises to restore David’s fallen booth.
