Amos sees three visions — a plague of locusts, a devouring fire, and the Lord standing by a wall with a plumb line, measuring Israel and finding it crooked. Twice Amos intercedes and God relents, but the plumb line signals that judgment is now set. The chapter then narrates Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, accusing Amos of conspiracy and ordering him to flee back to Judah — to which Amos replies that he is no professional prophet but a herdsman whom God called and commissioned.
