Amos states the principle at the heart of the book: “You only have I known of all the families of the earth; therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.” Election brings responsibility, not exemption. Using vivid images — a lion’s roar, a bird in a snare — Amos insists that the prophet cannot help but speak when God has spoken, and he announces that Samaria’s altars and luxurious houses will be torn down.
