Chapters 1–7

Nehemiah’s prayer and return, and the wall rebuilt in fifty-two days against threats and ridicule.

Chapter 1 (445 BC): Nehemiah hears of Jerusalem’s broken walls and mourns, fasts, confesses, and prays.
Chapter 2 (445 BC): Artaxerxes sends Nehemiah to Jerusalem, where he inspects the ruined walls by night.
Chapter 3 (445 BC): The people build the wall together, each family working on its own section.
Chapter 4 (445 BC): Ridicule and threats are met with prayer and a guard, and the builders work with weapons at hand.
Chapter 5 (445 BC): Nehemiah confronts the wealthy for exploiting the poor and models generous, selfless leadership.
Chapter 6 (445 BC): Threats and plots against Nehemiah fail, and the wall is finished in fifty-two days.
Chapter 7 (445 BC): Nehemiah appoints trustworthy leaders and registers the returned exiles by their genealogies.

Chapters 8–13

The reading of the Law, confession and covenant renewal, the city repopulated, and Nehemiah’s final reforms.

Chapter 8 (445 BC): Ezra reads the Law; the people weep, then rejoice, for “the joy of the LORD is your strength.”
Chapter 9 (445 BC): The Levites lead a great confession rehearsing God’s faithfulness and Israel’s rebellion.
Chapter 10 (445 BC): The people seal a written covenant to obey the Law and support the house of God.
Chapter 11 (445 BC): Leaders and lot-chosen families settle in Jerusalem to repopulate the city.
Chapter 12 (445 BC): The wall is dedicated with two great choirs, thanksgiving, and joyful music.
Chapter 13 (c. 432 BC): Nehemiah returns and reforms renewed abuses in the temple, the Sabbath, and mixed marriages.
