The people gather as one and ask Ezra to bring out the Book of the Law, and he reads it aloud from morning to midday while the Levites explain the meaning so the people understand. Convicted, the people weep, but Nehemiah and Ezra tell them not to grieve, “for the joy of the LORD is your strength,” and send them to celebrate with feasting and sharing. Rediscovering the command, they keep the Feast of Booths with great gladness, as had not been done since the days of Joshua.
