Seeking security for Ruth, Naomi sends her to the threshing floor at night, where, following custom, Ruth lies at the feet of the sleeping Boaz and asks him to spread his garment over her — to redeem her as kinsman. Boaz, moved by her loyalty in seeking him rather than a younger man, praises her and agrees, but tells her a nearer kinsman has the first right. He sends her home before dawn with six measures of barley, and Naomi assures her that Boaz will settle the matter that very day.
