At the town gate Boaz confronts the nearer kinsman, who is willing to buy Naomi’s land until he learns it comes with the duty to marry Ruth and raise up an heir for the dead; unwilling to endanger his own inheritance, he yields his right to Boaz. Before the elders and witnesses Boaz redeems the land and takes Ruth as his wife, and the LORD gives her a son, Obed. The women bless Naomi, whose empty arms now hold a grandson, and the book ends with the genealogy that runs from Perez through Boaz and Obed to Jesse and King David.
