In response to the people’s fear of drawing near, God clarifies the duties and privileges of the priests and Levites. Aaron and his sons bear the responsibility for the sanctuary and the priesthood, guarding it so that wrath does not fall on Israel again, and in return they receive designated portions of the offerings. The Levites assist them and are given the tithe of Israel as their inheritance, since they have no territorial inheritance — “I am your portion and your inheritance among the people of Israel.” The Levites in turn give a tithe of the tithe to the priests.
The chapter answers the crisis of the preceding rebellions by clearly defining who may approach God and how those who serve Him are to be sustained. The priests and Levites, having no land, live entirely from what is offered to God, a striking arrangement that makes the LORD Himself their inheritance — a privilege richer than any acreage. This principle, that those who serve at the altar share in the altar, is applied by Paul to gospel ministry (1 Corinthians 9:13-14), and the deeper truth, that God Himself is the portion of His people, becomes the confession of every believer: “The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup” (Psalm 16:5).
