God gives the ritual of the red heifer, a provision for cleansing from the defilement of death. A red heifer without blemish is slaughtered outside the camp, its blood sprinkled toward the tent of meeting, and the whole animal burned to ashes, which are gathered and mixed with fresh water to make the “water for impurity.” Anyone who touches a dead body, or is in a tent where someone has died, becomes unclean for seven days and must be sprinkled with this water on the third and seventh days to be cleansed; the one who refuses “defiles the tabernacle of the LORD.”
Death, the great consequence of sin, is treated as the deepest source of ritual defilement, and God graciously provides a means of cleansing so that a mortal, death-touched people can still draw near to the living God. The red heifer, uniquely slain and burned outside the camp, its ashes securing purification, is drawn on directly by Hebrews: “if the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ... purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God” (Hebrews 9:13-14). What the ashes did outwardly, the blood of Christ does inwardly and completely, cleansing not merely the body but the conscience from the defilement of sin and death.
