As they leave the temple, Jesus foretells its destruction and, on the Mount of Olives, gives the Olivet Discourse. He warns of false messiahs, wars, persecution, and the “abomination of desolation,” followed by great tribulation and then the glorious coming of the Son of Man in the clouds to gather His elect. He teaches the lesson of the fig tree and, since no one knows the day or hour, repeatedly commands His disciples, “Stay awake.”
