Paul calls believers to “be imitators of God” and “walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us.” They are to put away all sexual immorality, impurity, and covetousness, and to “walk as children of light,” exposing the works of darkness, being filled with the Spirit, singing and giving thanks. He then applies mutual submission to marriage: wives are to submit to their husbands as to the Lord, and husbands are to love their wives “as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her” — a union that is a profound picture of “Christ and the church.”
