c. 1010 BCDavid is anointed king over Judah at Hebron as war begins between his house and Saul’s.

At the LORD’s direction David goes up to Hebron, where the men of Judah anoint him king. But Abner, Saul’s commander, sets Saul’s son Ish-bosheth over the northern tribes, and civil war smolders between the two houses. A brutal contest at the pool of Gibeon leads to lasting enmity when Abner reluctantly kills Joab’s brother Asahel in self-defense.
