An Amalekite brings David news of the deaths of Saul and Jonathan at Gilboa, claiming to have finished off the wounded Saul in hope of reward; David has him executed for lifting his hand against the LORD’s anointed. Then David pours out a magnificent lament, “How the mighty have fallen,” honoring both Saul and, most tenderly, his beloved friend Jonathan. Even in his rival’s fall David shows no triumph, only grief.
