Judah becomes a vassal caught between Egypt and the rising Babylonian Empire. Nebuchadnezzar invades, and in 597 BC he carries off King Jehoiachin, the royal family, the officials, the craftsmen, and the temple treasures into exile in Babylon. He installs Zedekiah as a puppet king, but Zedekiah, like those before him, does evil and eventually rebels against Babylon, sealing the nation’s doom.
