Nebuchadnezzar besieges Jerusalem for two years; when the famine-weakened city falls in 586 BC, Zedekiah is captured, his sons killed before his eyes, and he is blinded and taken to Babylon. The temple, the palace, and the city are burned, the walls broken down, and the remaining people deported. Yet the book ends with a flicker of hope: years later the exiled king Jehoiachin is released from prison, given a place of honor, and provided for all his days at the table of Babylon’s king.
