Continuing his appeal for holiness and mutual affection, Paul pours out his joy. He had been anxious until Titus came with good news, and he rejoices not that the Corinthians were grieved, but that “you were grieved into repenting,” for “godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.” Their earnest response has comforted him greatly, and Titus’s affection for them has deepened, so that Paul has complete confidence in them.
