Paul explains that he chose not to make another painful visit, and that his severe letter was written out of love, not to cause pain but to show his abundant love. He urges the church now to forgive and comfort the man who had been disciplined and has repented, lest he be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow, and so that Satan gains no advantage. Paul then describes gospel ministry as a triumphal procession spreading “the fragrance of the knowledge of him,” an aroma of life to some and death to others.
