When Jeroboam’s son falls ill, his disguised wife visits the blind prophet Ahijah, who pronounces the doom of Jeroboam’s whole house for leading Israel into sin; the child dies as she returns. In Judah, Rehoboam’s reign is likewise marked by idolatry and “high places,” and Shishak of Egypt plunders the temple and palace treasures, an early sign of decline in the south as well.
