1 Corinthians 8

On food that had been offered to idols, Paul grants that “an idol has no real existence” and that food does not commend us to God — but “knowledge puffs up, while love builds up.” Not everyone has this knowledge, and a weaker believer’s conscience may be wounded and their faith destroyed if they see a fellow Christian eating in an idol’s temple. Therefore love must limit liberty: “if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble.”
