In a time of famine, Elimelech takes his wife Naomi and two sons from Bethlehem to sojourn in Moab, where the sons marry Moabite women, Orpah and Ruth. When all three men die, Naomi, hearing the LORD has given food to her homeland, sets out to return, urging her daughters-in-law to stay in Moab. Orpah turns back, but Ruth clings to Naomi with a vow of unbreakable loyalty — “Your people shall be my people, and your God my God” — and the two arrive in Bethlehem at the start of the barley harvest, Naomi calling herself Mara, “bitter,” for the LORD has dealt bitterly with her.
