The psalm first exults in God’s covenant with David, sworn to establish his throne and offspring forever, and in the LORD’s unmatched faithfulness. Then it turns to bewildered lament, for the crown seems cast to the ground; the psalmist pleads, “Lord, where is your steadfast love of old?” — closing Book 3 with the tension between promise and present ruin.
