The book opens by stating its purpose — to give wisdom, instruction, and discretion, especially to the young — and its foundational motto: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge.” A father urges his son to heed instruction and refuse the enticement of sinners who lure others into violence for gain. Then Wisdom herself cries aloud in the streets, warning that those who ignore her call will one day seek her in vain.
