Matthew 5

Jesus ascends a mountain and delivers the Sermon on the Mount. He begins with the Beatitudes, pronouncing blessing on the poor in spirit, the meek, the merciful, and the persecuted, and calls His disciples the salt of the earth and the light of the world. He declares that He came not to abolish the Law and the Prophets but to fulfill them, and calls for a righteousness exceeding that of the scribes and Pharisees — reaching past outward acts to anger, lust, and love even of enemies, that His people may be like their heavenly Father.
