Matthew study chapter

Matthew 3

c. AD 26John the Baptist prepares the way, calling for repentance, and baptizes Jesus, on whom the Spirit descends.

John the Baptist appears in the wilderness of Judea, preaching “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” and baptizing those who confess their sins, while warning the Pharisees to bear fruit in keeping with repentance. He points ahead to the mightier One who will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. Then Jesus comes to be baptized; as He rises from the water, the Spirit descends like a dove and the Father’s voice declares, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
