Controversy sharpens as the Pharisees accuse Jesus of breaking the Sabbath; He declares Himself “lord of the Sabbath” and does good by healing on it. When they attribute His exorcisms to Beelzebul, He exposes the folly of a kingdom divided and warns of the unforgivable blasphemy against the Spirit. He refuses to give a sign except “the sign of the prophet Jonah” — pointing to His death and resurrection — and defines His true family as those who do the will of His Father.
