Grieved that a tribe may vanish, yet bound by an oath not to give their daughters to Benjamin, Israel devises desperate remedies — destroying Jabesh-gilead for its absence to provide wives, and allowing the rest to seize dancing girls at Shiloh. Order is patched together by human expedients, and the book ends where it began its refrain: “everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”
