Jonah 2

From inside the fish Jonah prays, and his prayer is a psalm of distress and deliverance. He describes sinking into the deep, the waters closing over him, the weeds wrapped around his head, and his life fainting away — yet from “the belly of Sheol” he cried out and God heard him. He renounces the “vain idols” that forsake mercy, vows thanksgiving and sacrifice, and confesses the book’s great truth: “Salvation belongs to the LORD.” At God’s word, the fish vomits Jonah out onto dry land, a picture of resurrection from the depths.
