Jonah 1

God commands Jonah to go and cry out against the wickedness of Nineveh, but Jonah rises to flee “from the presence of the LORD,” boarding a ship bound for Tarshish in the opposite direction. God hurls a violent storm upon the sea, and while the terrified sailors cry to their gods, Jonah sleeps below. When the lot falls on Jonah, he confesses that he is fleeing the LORD, “who made the sea and the dry land,” and tells the sailors to throw him overboard. Reluctantly they do, the sea grows calm, the mariners fear the LORD and offer sacrifices, and God appoints a great fish to swallow Jonah, in whose belly he remains three days and three nights.
