When Lazarus of Bethany falls sick and dies, Jesus comes and, before the tomb, declares to Martha, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.” Deeply moved, He weeps, then calls, “Lazarus, come out!” and the dead man comes forth — His greatest sign. Many believe, but the alarmed council, led by Caiaphas, resolves to put Jesus to death, Caiaphas unwittingly prophesying that He would die for the nation.
