Job meditates on the brevity and frailty of human life, which springs up like a flower and withers, and contrasts it with a tree that can sprout again from a stump. In his grief he dares to voice a fragile hope for something beyond the grave — “If a man dies, shall he live again?” — longing that God might hide him in Sheol and then remember him, a hope that reaches toward resurrection.
