Zophar, the harshest of the three, rebukes Job’s many words and insists that if God spoke, He would reveal that Job deserves even more than he has suffered, for God exacts less than his guilt. Yet he too offers a path: if Job puts away his sin, he will be secure and full of hope. His counsel is orthodox in the abstract but cruelly misapplied to an innocent man.
