The people persist in their backsliding, clinging to deceit and refusing to repent even as the scribes falsify the law. Jeremiah voices the nation’s despairing cry, “The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved,” and his heart breaks: “Is there no balm in Gilead?”
